The GPS Plus collars can be fit out with a SAT download option by which the GPS data are transmitted via a commercial satellite telephone. This SAT option is available for GPS-Plus collars with minimum two
D-batteries. Because of the relative large dimension of the satellite telophone, the system is suitable only for larger animals. The SAT option gurantees fast rates of data transmission for projects in inaccessible
areas or if GSM coverage is not available
The data can be downloaded worldwide via e-mail nearly in real-time. In comparison to the Argos service, the costs for the data transmission are fairly low.
GPS data transmission via communication satellite from wildlife was already successful in 1995/1996 in our own studies on red deer with the TUBSAT-A.

Fig. 1: TUBSAT-A (=Technical University Berlin Satellite)
The TUBSAT-A (Technical University Berlin Satellite) was built from one of the heads of Vectronic Aerospace, the manufacturer of the GPS Plus series. It is still working in the orbit.
Because TUBSAT-A has only limited data transmission capacity the Sat download option is served nowadays via a worldwide operating commercial satellite company.
If you have questions about your project needs to use the SAT download option, you are pleased to contact us.
